Tracings its root way back to 3500 BC, Senet was the form of our backgammon today. Although played in ancient Egypt the exact origin of it has not been discovered yet and may never be. Being as popular as it is it has become known way back of many different aspects of the game.

Some believe the real variations called Tabulae and Nard are the first ones relating to backgammon. In Shahr-I Sokhta in 2004 a person found a backgammon board game that just may be the oldest ever uncovered. Throughout time many different variations have been showing up including The Royal Game of Ur, Tabulae, Jeux de Tables, and Tric-Trac. With each a newer and more detailed version has come out. It has been banned in several countries because it was used for gambling.

In 1743, the first documented version of the rules was written, and then in 1920 the doubling cube was added. Since 1931, sporting clubs have made formal rules for the backgammon game. 1964 brought us the first tournament for backgammon. Then in 1967 Las Vegas hosted the first World Championships of backgammon.

Online sites have made backgammon resources one of the best around. The beginner can go online and learn the tips and tricks of the game. Many sites have free games to practice up on as well.
